Planning and safety

For well-prepared visitors, Parc national des Pingualuit is an unparalleled opportunity for adventure. The sheer size of the park, its remoteness, limited search and rescue resources, wild animals and unpredictable weather conditions must always be kept in mind to make your excursion a pleasant one.

You are responsible for your own safety. An expedition planning guide for the park is available online to help you with your preparations, providing answers to many questions that you may have in advance of your adventure, either in the company of a guide or on your own.

In summer when hiking, be prepared for rocky and wet zones. In winter, cold temperatures, blizzards and short daylight hours might catch you unaware. Be sure to have the proper equipment.

It is also important to be prepared for air-service delays and bad weather. Caution and patience are your best guides, and extra food should be planned.

Park staff use snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles to monitor the park, as well as for maintenance and re-supply purposes. These vehicles may also be used for search and rescue operations.

Parc national des Pingualuit endorses the Leave-No-Trace principles for outdoor activities that are applied in all national parks in Québec. Planning your adventure includes planning to leave no trace of your passage.
