Paddling the Koroc River - Nunavik departure

This unique expedition offers a perfect balance between spectacular hikes and exhilirating river descent through the Torgnat Mountains and the Koroc River Valley. Personalize your river descent and choose the boat for you: a qayak (kayak), an inflatable canoe (traveller) or one of our rafts.

The Koroc River takes its source in the heights of the Torngat Mountains and crosses a large valley shaped by the glacier’s passage. The Koroc River turquoise waters are a must-see for paddlers. This expedition is a pilgrimage for experienced paddlers, and yet, is accessible for beginners and intermediates. This expedition allows you to experience the best of the Parc national Kuururjuaq ​in all its splendor!

ITINÉRAIRE

Day 1 | Trekking in Kauvvik Valley

Departure will be from Kuujjuaq or Kangiqsualujjuaq where you will meet your guides for the trip. After a 45 min flight, you will land in the Kauvvik Valley which is a dream destination for hiking enthusiasts. Trekking in the Kauvvik area (14 km) will open you to magnificent mountains on both sides of the river are the best feature of this section. You will assess check your material and organize the day after departure with your guides.

• Meals: Continental-type breakfast (coffee, tea, croissants, cereal, toast, granola, fruit) / lunch on site (soup, crackers, wraps or sandwiches, bannock) / supper at the camp (sausages, cheese, casserole, prepared fish or meat, meat pies, pasta).

• Accommodations: rustic camp (shelter dome)

Days 2 | Koroc River Descent and hiking in the Torngats

Beginning of the Koroc River descent. The Koroc River is accessible and challenging to intermediate paddlers (RIII) or novice paddlers (SW-RI-II). Even though the Koroc River may seems easy at first, remember that you will be travelling in various river settings, at different water levels, which requires a variety of skills and experience. Paddlers must be confident running Class 3 rapids (RIII) and have canoe tripping experience.​

Day 5 | Trekking in the Palmer River Valley​

You will stop at the mouth of the Palmer River. Nested between two mountain ranges, the Palmer River offers a beautiful 10-15km hike with breathtaking sightseing.

• Accommodations: Camping on the Palmer river Valley.

Day 6 | Koroc River Descent

On day 6, you will continue your way down the beautiful waters of the Koroc River for another 17km.

• Accommodations: Camping on the river bank

Day 7 | Trekking in Mount Haywood area

The Mount Haywood (732 m) sector offers breathtaking views on the valley and is considered the gateway of Labrador. You will have the day to hike this iconic mountain and enjoy the stories on how the land in this areas used to be occupied by Inuit and Naskapis in the past. The hike itself is around 15km.

Day 8 | Koroc River Descent

This 17 km section is most interesting for its rapids, as it offers 12 RII/III, RIII and four bigger sets of rapids. The white waters are flowing down this magnificent valley with 1500-2000 fe​et walls on each side. You will then arrive in the comfort of our serviced Qurlutuarjuq camp. The camp is located a few kilometers away from the magnificent Qurlutuarjuq Falls in a wooded area.

• Accommodations: Qurlutuarjuq camp

Day 9 | Explore Qurlutuarjuq camp and Narsaguluk Creek sectors

You will have the opportunity to rest at the camp and enjoy the beautiful scenery of its surrounding or go for a 10km hike to the mountain top behind the camp. The trail offers a beautiful view on the Narsaguluk Creek's valley.

Day 10 | Explore Qurlutuarjuq Falls sector and panoramic return flight

On your last day, you will be able to go hike the 5 km trail to the Qurlutuarjuq Falls and enjoy the surroundings or . Then, our charter plane will pick you up for a panoramic flight back to Kangiqsualujjuaq. Once in town, you might have the time to visit the Park's pavillion and its exibit room to learn more about the spectacular land you just crossed.

What you need to know ?​​​ ​

Meals are provided locally, based on traditional cuisine as much as possible, therefore depending on seasonal catches and other available provisions. The meals listed in the itinerary are those normally provided during this expedition. In accordance with northern realities, meals may be adjusted depending on availabilities. Weather in Nunavik is changing constantly. Expeditions may be adjusted to take into account current conditions. Openness to new situations (such as plane delays or cancelations, changes in the itinerary), flexibility and the ability to adapt to modified activities and agenda are important prerequisites for travelers in Nunavik Parks and an authentic part of your northern experience.

Notes

Price per person, before taxes. All-included (meals, accommodations, transportation). Preferential prices for JBNQA beneficiaries. 2 participa​nts needed to guarantee departure, contact us to join a group. Although hunting and trapping are strictly prohibited into the National Parks of Quebec, Inuit have the right to practise their subsistence activities throughout Nunavik, including the parc national Kuururjuaq. Thus, witness a group of Inuit hunting caribou, ringed or trapping foxes may be part of the Nunavik park experience.

Safety

All the expeditions led by Kuururjuaq team can be followed day by day through daily satellite positioning. The team can contact the park staff anytime with a satellite phon​e. It's part of visitor​​s responsibilities to plan their own safety: training to prepare your trip and having the proper insurance is part of it. Therefore, we strongly advise visitors to take an insurance policy covering air evacuation costs.​
